An Animal Health Worker provides preventive health care, assistance in disease control and basic first aid services to farm animals and poultry. He or she works under indirect or distant supervision of registered veterinarian.

Her work includes advising farmers about health check-ups for their livestock, vaccination, deworming, hygiene, breeding, feeding, and management of animal waste. The proj-ect was conceived under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, with the objective of providing last mile coverage of livestock management. In 2017-18, the Jharkhand Opportunities for Harnessing Rural Growth (JOHAR) took the project under its wing and the World Bank began funding it.*
