A Bamboo Mat Weaver is trained in making mats of seasoned and coloured bamboo strips according to a given pattern or design. They are trained in pre-weaving processes such as soaking pre-cut bamboo stakes in water to soften and bleach them. They also learn how to remove stakes from bath when bamboo strips are soft, then cutting and removing splints and splitting them into strips of desired size and thickness. They also learn to colour strips according to desired pattern and weaving them into mats. They learn to cut off and conceal or weave together loose ends to finish edges. Finally they have to produce a finished mat using a loom.

Minimum Qualification • After completion of class 8 and minimum age is 18 years old for enrolling for National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF)* level 3 Bamboo Mat Weaver course. 1-2 years in weaving is preferable.
* NSQF is a nationally integrated education and competency-based framework that enables persons to acquire desired competency levels in a chosen field. NSQF includes vocational education, vocational training, general education and technical education which prepares an individual for the job market with competent skills. An individual may return at any time to upgrade skills after gaining experience
