A marine engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of all major equipment onboard a ship. They work with naval architects to design and build everything from small yachts and fishing boats to submarines and aircraft carriers

1. Complete 10+2 in the Science stream(Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics)
2. Complete a Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B.Tech) in Marine Engineering/Naval Architecture and Ship Building/ Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
OR
Complete Bachelor’s degree, followed by a Master’s degree in the same field
OR
Complete Bachelor’s degree and pursue a Diploma in Marine Engineering.
For admissions, you must qualify entrance examinations conducted at the national level (JEE Main, JEE Advanced, etc.) or state level (WBJEE, AP EAMCET etc.) or Institute level (VET,IP etc.)

• Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Scholarship - This scholarship is provided to students enrolled in the first year of their engineering undergraduate course. Eligibility includes an aptitude test. It is awarded by the Government of India for economically backward students who have a strong aptitude for scientific research.*
• Merit-cum-Means based Scholarship - About 20,000 such engineering scholarships are awarded by the Ministry of Minority Affairs every year. The full course fees of awardees is directly paid to their institutions under this scheme.*
• Indian Oil Educational Scholarship - The IOC Ltd offers 300 scholarships every year to eligible students. Students need to be enrolled in an undergraduate course. The scholarship particularly focuses on students with physical disabilities, women and students from North East and J&K.*

Places of work: You are likely to work on all kinds of ships, such as ferries, cargo ships, and hovercrafts, cruise liners and military vessels , submarines and so on
Work Environment: You will work in shifts, which are likely to be of 8 to 12 hours, but you have to remain alert throughout the day. Your work may involve some amount of traveling. While aboard you may have to work in the engine room, which is usually badly ventilated.

Sonali Banerjee is India’s first woman maritime engineer. She pursued a BE in marine engineering at Kolkata’s Taratala-based Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI).
